Managing Campus Visits

  • Prepare an agenda for the candidate’s visit and provide the agenda to the candidate in advance of their visit.  Be sure to include complete directions and maps if the candidate is traveling to campus alone. 
  • Welcome each candidate to the campus in the same manner.  For example, if one candidate is taken out to dinner, then all candidates should be taken out to dinner.  Give each candidate equivalent information about the position, the department or school, and the campus.
  • Use the campus visit as an opportunity to communicate the following:
    • The Department is seriously interested in the candidate’s scholarly credentials and work
    • UConn is a great place to work because….;
    • UConn is a great place to work because it has (work life balance, family friendly policies
  • Distribute the same information about family friendly policies and programs to all candidates. 
  • Schedule a meeting for each candidate with one of the University’s Recruitment Ambassadors.
  • Time permitting, schedule a campus tour for all candidates.
  • Provide all candidates with a complete list of things it would be possible for them to discuss in the course of negotiations.  These might include:
    • Course release time
    • Lab equipment
    • Lab space
    • Research support
    • Administrative support
    • Discretionary funds
    • Travel funds
    • Summer salary
    • Moving expenses
    • Recruitment expenses
    • Other issues of concern
